CTGR gives birth to the first GW-level offshore wind farm in China

2021-07-23

China Three Gorges Renewables (Group) Co. (600905) announced that its Shaba offshore wind power project has seen its installed capacity exceeding 1 million kilowatts on July 15, making it the first domestic GW-level offshore wind farm.

Shaba, the largest single offshore wind farm in Asia by capacity under construction, serves as a great model for scaling up offshore wind power projects in China.

With five planned phases, the Shaba Project, located in Yangjiang, Guangdong Pronvice, has a total installed capacity of 1.7 million kilowatts. It is planned to install 269 offshore wind turbines, build 3 offshore booster stations, and connect to the onshore centralized control center using 220 kV submarine cables.

Once fully completed, the project can generate about 4.7 billion kWh of electricity annually, which is enough to power about 2 million households. It can help save about 1.5 million tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4 million tons per year, laying a solid foundation for the transformation of the energy structure in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

China enjoys natural advantages in developing offshore wind power. With a coastline of 18,000 kilometers, a sea area usable for offshore wind of more than 3 million square kilometers and abundant offshore wind energy resources, the country is able to scale up offshore wind power projects, which will effectively enhance the utilization efficiency of marine resources, and reduce project construction and operation costs.
